Statement

‘Obaitori’ is an ancient Japanese idiom that captures the beauty of individual growth. Like trees that blossom at their own unique rhythm, we all flourish in our own time. Suki is a late bloomer in the realm of creativity, her academic pursuits having left little room for artistic expression.

The passage of time has cultivated an inner radiance that transcends her pursuit of perfection, a passion which fractures a conformity to what she was led to believe to be beautiful; art in all its variations is a gift, and any gift is always beautiful in itself.

Her passion for life and ‘truth’ is reflected in her compositions. Suki regards colour to be an enhancement to emotions, beauty replenishes emptiness and art enlightens, enriches and appeals to our curiosity and wonderment, gifts separating us from the animal kingdom.

These new found gifts have enriched Suki in ways academia could not, although she cannot credit these gifts as her own, they are gifts from the Creator of creativity Himself, who created the sun to rise and to set against a forever changing backdrop that no human artist could ever hope to achieve. A Creator who set her free from her bonds of restraint to emerge into who she was meant to become.

As Paul Johnson once quoted  “a deliberate plan is not always necessary for the highest level of art; it emerges.”
